John Hartranft launched The Volleyball Practice (TVP) in 2014, as a limited project to better understand the obstacles and motivations associated with youth volleyball, and to apply solutions that broaden access to opportunities to play the sport beyond what was being offered at the time.
TVP grew from John's roots in organized volleyball that began in 1978, and from the many people that have been instrumental to growing volleyball experiences along the way. The limited project extended from one year to five+ years.

From 2014 through 2019, TVP:
- directly served more than 1500 youth in the Washington DC metro area with volleyball clinics, open gyms, leagues and competitive team training and travel programs.
- sponsored more than 30 coaches and dozens of young adults interested in teaching volleyball by offering training, education, travel experiences and financial assistance.
Though no longer a direct sponsor of youth volleyball programs, TVP now celebrates and supports the hard work, creativity, teamwork, and commitment of people making an impact with their own practice.
Since 2019, TVP has donated more than $5,000 in equipment, supplies and financial support to others, including, Maryland Volleyball Program and Leveling The Playing Field.
